Egypt 1941. I received a particularly harsh dressing down from Gen. Wavel after coming to the defense of a young bedouin girl who had found herself in a compromising situation with a young lance corporal. The punishment for my insubordination…Magnum.

Quinlan and Wavell contemplate my fate. I’d take on a score of Rommel’s Nazis before I crossed him again.

There’s some tea on the table, and some scones. You might try the strawberry jam too, it’s really quite good. An old comrade from the Burma campaign sent it to me — Tanky Moran. Got his name when he single-handedly took on a Japanese tank and knocked it out…Now he’s selling jam in Devonshire.

On the right, a young Tanky Moran from Devonshire. Say what you will about the 17th Indian Division, the man made a damn fine jam.

1937, England. While I was a student at The Royal Military College at Sandhurst, I was sent down in the winter of my third year when I was falsely accused of causing the partial paralysis of one of my fellow students during a school prank. Even Her Majesty’s generous health care couldn’t help that poor chap. Although I did hear that some years later, he starred in a Quick-Change act in the resort town of Blackpool with the LaSalle Sisters. I always meant to see him perform, but Blackpool always was a bit gaudy for my taste.
